Disney and Marvel means fun!!!
Aug 31st
There has been some doom and gloom associates among many of my friends concerning Disney buying Marvel Entertainment. To help with these feelings of uncertainty I thought I would post a few suggestions as to get films we could see out of this.
Pocahontas 3: The Mutant Prince. Pocahontas meets a young mutant, Wolverine and they are off on a musical adventure.
Beauty and the Beast returns. A modern day fairy tale between a yound socialite and her job as a lab assistant to Henry McCoy. Complete with dancing Sentinels
Magneto’s New Groove, can one of the most powerful mutants on Earth manage after he is turned into a llama? Watch as he and Cyclops have wacky adventures together bounding through the Savage Lands.
The Shield in the Stone: A wacky Merlin teaches a young boy some valuable lessons than gives him the Super Soldier Serum.
Finding Namor: The lost Prince of Atlantis has a whisical journey to find love. The avenging son gets lost and his family must find him.
also rans
Nick Fury and his Howling Seven Dwarves.
The Toad Prince
The Doom King
edit: few more suggestions from my pal Shieldhaven
Alternate form of the Sword and the Stone: The Once and Future King Of Latveria
the Little Mermaid 3, Namor lures Ariel back to the deeps…
The Hulk of Notre Dame
and from Caudelac
The Starfox and the Hound
Master Pandaemonium’s Fantasia
Song of the South, Narrated by Remy leBeau
Dr. Strange’s Apprentice
Hope that helps.
Clockwork Ball
Aug 23rd
So i went to the Clockwork Ball last night with some partners in crime. The Clockwork Ball is a triangle area steampunk gathering. It was held last night at a club in Chapel Hill and much fun was had by all. I blame Rabbit for convincing me and thank her for the loan of gear to look appropriate. I am of course a fan of the steampunk aesthetic. I saw some folks who were fun to talk if ever so briefly. There are certainly some people I have met in the area who I kind of wish I knew better but a crowded, hot and loud club is not the best place to have a functional conversation. I met some new people as well who seemed very cool. I will hopefully catch up with them again at Dragoncon.
I briefly mat the darling Davenport sisters, Emmett & Klaude. I found out there was local radio show with steampunk focus that hey host called the Clockwork Cabaret. The music selection is remarkably eclectic and fun. Everything from Pirates of Penzance to Kate Bush to Dr Steel. Here is a little ditty I discovered while listening to one of the shows. It is now on my podcast rotation.

I did another appearance on the Tome Show podcast. We were reviewing the new 4e Eberron Setting books. I seem to be making this a habit.

The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension
Aug 15th
It is 25th anniversary The Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eighth Dimension. If you have not seen it, then you really should correct that. This is the sort of film that the term “cult classic” was created for. It is quirky and bizarre. There is some serious cheesiness in the dialog and story, but it is all self aware cheesiness. It all done for effect.
For the gamers out there this is the 1980′s version of Spirit of the Century. It is pulp action adventure characters placed in to a 1980′s context. Buckaroo Banzai is kind of a Doc Savage figure. He is great at everything. His crew are all equally interesting in their own right.
I could go on about this movie forever. I will include a trailer for it found on youtube. When you get a chance you should definitely track this down and watch it as a geek essential.

Second Skin
Aug 12th
So I played EQ almost grudgingly. It was the the thing everyone is doing and there is something inside me that resists what everyone else thinks is cool. It is a thing. I had some friends I was around at the time though and they convinced me to play. I played for a while off and on and ultimately it left me kind of disappointed. There were moments that were cool but an MMO generally makes a less than compelling single player game well designed for a single player.
I moved into a few other games. I tried Dark age of Camelot because my brother played. I actually was excited by the beta of City of Heroes. I mean whats not to like in playing a superhero. I tried and actually liked Eve Online. I did eventually get into WoW and play it even now. I am having more fun these days in the game. Mainly that is due to having a friend to run with most of the time when I am on.
That is the key. Online games are not so compelling because the game play is so damned awesome. It is compelling because your doing it with other people. Now I work in the industry and I view the games from the other angle. I can watch games and boards and see the community of people playing and I find I am more and more interested in the personalities behind the screen names and avatars.
Here is a fine documentary about the virtual worlds and the people who play them. It is called Second Skin. It is not always flattering. It is very harsh in parts. It is also sweet in some spots and it kind of drives home the sense of community that is there, both the good and bad parts of it.
The Sanctum
Aug 11th
I am still liking this odd little webseries about superhero drug addicts. It is funny a little and stark enough to make it a touch real. Imagine if you were a speedster and the only way you could slow down and enjoy the world was to take tranquilizers. I am really interested to see where this little show goes.

The rare political post
Aug 3rd
Okay i promise to not be a political blogger generally. I have my pet peves as much as the next guy but I learned a while back that most people don’t like to be preached too or argued with. However one thing I do take issue with are people who through deliberate ignorance or outright fraud try and rewrite history to match the conspiracy theory. Now I love a good conspiracy theory. They are great fun. The key though is to take all the known factual evidence and make it fit the conspiracy. It is not okay to go out and shared made up stuff and try and convince people it is the truth.
The Apollo moon landing debunkers in this offend me on some level. They are just completely ignoring all sorts of proof to convince people that we never made it to the moon. The two great human endeavors of the 20th was the major strides made to eliminate some pretty heinous diseases and the moon landing. They are insulting the thousands of men and women of the space program every time they pull that crap and it bothers me.
There are worst offenders of course.
the ones annoying me lately are the “Obama was not born in America” people. These guys would have you believe he was not born in the states. Recently they trotted out a fake birth certificate in Kenya. How can you tell it is fake? Well the folks at this site sum it up pretty well.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/8/2/761144/-Debunking-the-unbearably-stupid
First, the hospital is Coast Provincial General Hospital (sometimes said to be Coast Province General Hospital), not Coast General Hospital.
Second, Kenya was a Dominion the date this certificate was allegedly issued and would not become a republic for 8 months.
Third, Mombasa belonged to Zanzibar when Obama was born, not Kenya.
Fourth, Obama’s father’s village would be nearer to Nairobi, not Mombasa.
Fifth, the number 47O44– 47 is Obama’s age when he became president, followed by the letter O (not a zero) followed by 44–he is the 44th president.
Sixth, EF Lavender is a laundry detergent.
Seventh, would a nation with a large number of Muslims actually say “Christian name” (as opposed to name) on the birth certificate?
Eigth, his father (born in 1961) would have been 24 or 25 when he was born and not 26.
Ninth, it was called the “Central Nyanza District,” not Nyanza Province. The regions were changed to provinces in 1970.
meanwhile if you would like to see some of the actual account of what happened when people went looking for President Obama’s birth certificate go here.
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html
In the end it is a matter of which material evidence you will believe. The one with the least problems is pretty clearly the one in Hawaii but hey if your a doubt everything involved there then I can accept it on a skepticism level. Some people believe we are actually in a vast computer simulation after all. But to doubt that and accept the supposed Kenyan document then I got to say your just being willfully ignorant or just lying to make your ideas work.
Can we now move past this? This particular non issue is so annoying to me. Can you people just, I don’t know, argue the freaking ideas instead of making up crap to try and discredit the president? I mean seriously is the philosophy on the far right so bankrupt that it can’t be argued on it’s own merits? That is what this little non controversy tells me. You are done trying to convince people your right and are just going to raise up some xenophobic lying BS to escape having to face the actual scrutiny involved in debate.
Political rant off. By all means though, discuss.
